Prerequisites (description): | Laboratory is available for students who passed the following exams: Laboratory of elementary biophysics, Physics I, II, III, Mathematics I, II, III, Analysis of measurement uncertainties, Preliminary laboratory for biophysicists, Cassical mechanics, Introduction to quantum mechanics of molecular systems, Physics of molecules and macromolecules in aqueous media, Introduction to microbiology and molecular biology, Organic and bioorganic chemistry, Laboratory of chemistry, Methods of molecular biophysics The main goal of Laboratory of biophysics for advanced is to give students of specialization Molecular biophysics better understanding of these modern experimental methods used in molecular biophysics, for which theoretical basis were described in the frame of “Molecular spectroscopy” and “Methods of molecular biophysics” lectures. Students of this specialization had a possibility to make themselves familiar with methods used in modern molecular biophysics while making experiments in the frame of the Laboratory of basic biophysics, and also partially also in the frame of Laboratory of chemistry and Laboratory of molecular biology but they had no possibility to make longer experiments using these methods. Experiments that are proposed in the program of Laboratory of biophysics for advanced give students more freedom to plan and conduct their experiments. The aim is to teach the students how to be independent in the experimental work with the use of the methods presented. Laboratory of biophysics for advanced takes place during first 7 weeks of the semester, and the first week is devoted to choose the experiments and prepare to conduct them.. The Laboratory consists of three long, 36-hours, six-day experiments that are conducted together by two students. However, these are not any three experiments from those that are available but the package of three properly chosen experiments to give the overview of the methods used in the modern molecular biophysics. |

Experimental laboratory on modern molecular biophysics The main goal of Laboratory of biophysics for advanced is to give students better understanding of the modern experimental methods used in molecular biophysics, and teach students how to plan, perform and analyze experiments using these methods. |

Exercise packages for a given academic year will be given at the beginning of the summer semester |
Bibliography: |
Due to the very broad spectrum of methods and experiments proposed in the frame of this Laboratory materials for each package of experiments will be given separately. |
Learning outcomes: |
Knowledge: Due to the very broad spectrum experiments and because each student choses and conducts only three of them (one package) the knowledge gained depends critically on the decision the student which experiments to make. Therefore only some overall information about the knowledge gained may be given. In particular, students will learn how to use some physical techniques to study molecules, macromolecules and their complexes that are important in some biological processes. Skills: 1. To plan and conduct experiments in molecular biophysics 2. To work in team 3. To use equipment useful in biophysical studies 4. To analyze and present the results of experiments Attitudes: 1. Understanding what means ethics in science 2. Responsibility for results of experiments 3. Proper behaviour while working with chemical and biological samples and equipment use in biophysical studies |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Number of permitted absences and the rules of absence management: Maximum two justified absences per semester Credits for the Laboratory are given based on: 1. positive notes for entrance colloquia 2. performance during classes 3. positive notes for laboratory reports that were prepared individually by each student |
