Brief description

The lecture gives an overview of the most important problems related to decision-making and their consequences for social welfare. Presented are methods of decision making, including selected issues of social choice theory and public choice. Special attention will be devoted to the problems of justice, both in terms of global concepts for determining a fair social governance and the methods of solving the practical problems of division. Discussed will be ways to evaluate social welfare and the relationship between prosperity and social inequalities. The lecture also covers selected issues of cost-benefit analysis, problems and methods of delivery of public goods and the use of shared resources.

The course provides an introduction to the issues addressed by global education (global citizenship education) and education for sustainable development, with an emphasis on their critical approaches.

The course aims to support students in developing critical thinking and critical reading skills, as well as in challenging dominant perspectives and seeking alternative, more equitable solutions or viewpoints. Furthermore, the course aims to foster a sense of global justice, responsibility, and citizenship in a global world, alongside a commitment to social and environmental change and building a sustainable world.

Brief description

The objective of the course is to present the concept of smart city from a theoretical and practical perspective. The classes will show how cities are operate as an organism - social, economic, political; by using innovative technologies, they can cope with the complex challenges of urbanization. The classes will discuss the most important challenges faced by cities: social, demographic, ecological and economic, but focusing mostly on their economic aspect. It will show how cities have dealt with these challenges historically and throughout the industrial revolution, and how the fourth industrial revolution, through the use of digital solutions, changes existing solutions and transforms a traditional city into a smart city.

Brief description

(in Polish) During the seminar we are going to analyze what has changed in our understanding of Europe and the European Union in recent years? How to reconcile dominant narratives about Europe and the European Union before and after Brexit, the pandemic, the refugee crisis and the war in Ukraine?

During classes we will look at the ways in which European identity, internal divisions of Europe and its relations with the rest of the world has been defined. By reading historical, sociological and political texts, we will consider how different visions of the European past and its ideal political organization translate into current political discussions and what kind of the future of Europe can be imagined.

Brief description

The lecture aims to present a general set of aviation legal norms, elements falling within the scope of various branches of law: international and internal - administrative, so-called economic, civil, criminal and other. It also regards to regulations on liberalisation of European air transport. It includes licensing of air carriers, access of Community air carriers to intra-Union air routes, fares and rules for air services and slots. It also touches the external relations with other countries.

The aim of the lecture is also to present the current issues of the legal status, development trends and the doctrine of international space law. Issues concerning practical aspects of satellite technologies as well as institutional forms of international cooperation in the use of space and celestial bodies will be discussed.

The main aim of the course is to develop a better understanding of the nature and role of transnational corporations in the contemporary world economy and of the effects of their operations. Typical attributes of such corporations are examined as well as their organizational, geographical and sectoral profiles. The course then moves to examine the principal theories of transnational corporations, issues of ownership and control and to the complex interface between their interests and those of the countries where they operate.

(in Polish) Celem kursu jest przybliżenie społeczności akademickiej problematyki związanej z równym traktowaniem. Uczestnictwo w e-kursie pozwoli kursantkom i kursantom zdobyć wiedzę m.in. o tym, czym jest dyskryminacja oraz jakie konsekwencje z niej wynikają, przyjrzeć się własnej postawie wobec tematu równości płci czy wreszcie – rozwinąć podstawowe umiejętności reagowania w przypadku dyskryminacji.

W trakcie studiów na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, bez względu na sposób studiowania, etapy studiów czy język wykładowy, bez względu na jednostkę organizującą kurs (ogólny o kodzie 0000-KRPDUW-OG czy kursy wydziałowe o tym samym tytule) ,,Kurs na Równość – przeciwdziałanie dyskryminacji na UW” może być realizowany tylko raz. W przypadku nieprzestrzegania tej zasady, zastrzegamy sobie możliwość usunięcia osoby studiującej z listy osób zapisanych na kurs.

Brief description

(in Polish) During the course, we will discuss the major ways in which risk has been theorized in the social sciences: psychometric approach, cultural theory, SAR Framework, theory of risk society, governmentality perspective, social systems theory, and socio-material approaches. Next, we are going to examine fundamental concepts and principles for understanding and acting under conditions of risk and uncertainty. Our topics of interests include risk assessment, risk perception, risk governance, and risk communication. Next, we will investigate three specific risk issues: a.) risk and Anthropocene, b.) risk and the vested interests of corporate bodies, c.) power, social inequality and risk. All in all, we will attempt to answer the question how, concepts, approaches and methods, can support the assessments, communication and handling of the risks, and how risks are perceived.
