Lesson plan week-by-week Week 1: Introduction to the aims and structure of the course. What is academic writing? Week 2: Genres of academic writing. Article, monographs, reviews, conference papers. Week 3: Reading week. Joint discussion of the style and structure in the assigned academic text. Week 4: Research questions. Analysis vs synthesis. Week 5: Sources. Primary and secondary sources. Finding information in academic publications. Open-access sources of information. Week 6: Workshop (1). Writing an abstract to an unseen article. Week 7: Citation (1). Academic honesty and plagiarism. Constructing a bibliography. Week 8: Citation (2). Footnotes. Referencing software. Week 9: Workshop (2). Writing a short paragraph with footnotes and bibliography. Week 10: Argumentation. Types of arguments. Fallacies. Week 11: Text structure. Introduction, body of the text, conclusions. Week 12: Language and style. Terminology, clarity, cohesiveness. Metody dydaktyczne: |
(tylko po angielsku) Knowledge: - The student understands the nature and purpose of academic writing vis-à-vis other types of communication. - The student understands the basic concepts relating to the production of written academic English, such as ‘argument,’ ‘structure,’ ‘reference,’ ‘source,’ etc. - The student grasps the importance of academic honesty and ethics in relation to issues of citation. Skills: - The student knows how to formulate valid and sound arguments. - The student is able to organise a short- to medium-length academic text, paying attention to clarity and effectiveness of structure. - The student knows how to use academic terminology and style. - The student knows how to build a bibliography, cite sources, create footnote and in-text references according to different styles. |

Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
(tylko po angielsku) The course is assessed based on the performance at the three workshops as well as the final assignment consisting of a draft of an academic essay on a topic of the student’s choice, comprising an abstract, introduction, a sketch of the arguments, conclusions, references, and bibliography. Each workshop will amount to 20% of the final grade, while the draft essay will account for the remaining 40%. The assessment criteria for the workshop assignments will be discussed with students before each course. The draft essay will be assessed based on the following criteria: research question, arguments, structure, language and style, references and bibliography. |
