Skrócony opis: |
This academic course aims at familiarizing students with the laser techniques which are applied for studies of atmosphere. It is assumed that after attending the course students will be able to navigate through the current English literature in the field. They will acquaint themselves with the basis of the laser techniques, their advantages and limitations, and will be able to utilize at least one of these techniques in practice. This lecture is taught in English only in hybrid form. |
Pełny opis: |
The aim of the course is to introduce, also in practice, modern laser techniques used in studies of atmospheric aerosols and clouds. A detailed program of lectures will be given at the first meeting. I will cover at least 10 of following techniques: Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) Cavity Ring-Down spectroscopy (CRD) Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) Photoluminescence (PL) Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) Light Induced Atomic Desorption (LIAD) Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probing (FSSP) Cloud Particle Imager (CPI) Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) RAdio Detection And Ranging (RADAR) Vertical and 3D Scanning Could RADAR LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) Aerosol-Polarization-Raman LIDAR Fluorescence LIDAR High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) DIfferential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) Radial Velocity and 3D Scanning Doppler LIDAR Scheimpflug LIDAR Ocean LIDAR The course was initially addressed to graduate students specializing in the field of atmospheric physics and geophysics. However, over the years, it proved to be popular among students from other disciplines. It is also a popular choice for the ERASMUS students and a frequent choice of PhD candidates. The students within 4EU+ Alliance are welcome. Having a basic knowledge of the atmospheric physics will be an asset to students, although it is not necessary to understand the majority of the lectures. The estimated student workload is following: - participation in lectures: 20h - practical training: 10h (one-to-one sessions) - written report on results and practical work performed by the student: 20h - preparation for the exam: 10h |

Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
An assessment of the final grade will be based on the written report on the results and work conducted by the student during the practical training (50% of the final grade) and on the evaluation of the written exam (50% of the final grade). The topics for the exam will be given 3 weeks in advance, and will cover the material realized during lectures. During the exam session one written exam and one make-up exam are planned. Attending lectures is recommended, although not obligatory. Attendance to all lectures in the whole semester increases the final grade of 0.5 degree. Note that due to COVID situation no face-to-face individual projects are possible for lecture in Winter semester 2020/2021, therefore student are required only to pass the exam. The mock exam is on 14/1/2021 at 13.30-15.00, to pass it you must get mark 4 or higher! The exam is scheduled on 28/1/2021 at 13.30-15.00. The resit exam is on 11/2/2021 at 13.30-15.00. Whether these exams will be carried out online or in class will be decided at a later point. NOTE: Passing the exam is not required for doctoral students. Therefore they can either take the exam (and receive the exam mark) or they can receive the credit (passed) for their active and regular participation in classes. |
