Założenia (opisowo):

This lecture serves as an introduction to the topic of quantum simulation, one of the main fields of quantum technologies. The students are expected to have the basic knowledge of quantum mechanics (Quantum Mechanics course or equivalent).

The lecture will aim to provide an overview of the opportunities and challenges in quantum simulation, starting from the fundamental properties of many-body quantum systems, the idea of quantum computation and simulation, the implementation of quantum simulators and most promising experimental platforms, and some exemplary problems of particular interest.

The course will consist of 15 lectures covering the following topics:

1. Recapitulation of quantum mechanics

2. Entanglement, density matrix formalism, entropy of quantum states

3. Many-body physics, macroscopic quantum states

4. Quantum technologies, digital and analog approach

5. Quantum control theory

6. Physical platforms: trapped ions

7. Ion chains and crystals

8. Physical platforms: ultracold atoms

9. Cold atoms in optical lattices

10. Physical platforms: solid state setups

11. Superconducting circuits, quantum dots and photonic crystals

12. Physical platforms: Rydberg atoms in tweezers

13. Hybrid quantum systems

14. Verification of quantum simulators

15. Some tasks for a quantum simulator

Efekty uczenia się:

Knowledge:

The students will learn the crucial concepts behind the idea of quantum technologies, and become familiar with the experimental platforms used in the field and the computational tools involved.

Skills:

The students will understand the challenges as well as opportunities provided by the structure of quantum mechanics in the context of various technological applications. They will be able to analyze the basic properties of many-body Hamiltonians and the corresponding phase diagrams.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Lecture presence, homework problems and oral exam.
