Skrócony opis:

Particle cosmology is an interface of particle physics and cosmology, which are in tight connection.

As we trace back in time the expanding Universe, the temperature becomes higher.

To understand the evolution of the early Universe, we need to know how particles interact at high energy, even beyond the scope of the present collider experiments.

At the same time, we may learn physics beyond the standard model of particle physics, from cosmological observations.

For example, dark matter, baryon asymmetry, and inflation have been intensively studied.

This course is aimed at discussing various topics from the basic to the frontier in particle cosmology.

Pełny opis:

The course will be composed of two parts.

1) Lectures on the basics (contents may change upon the request of

students):

- Review of particle physics

- Review of cosmology

(minimum knowledge about particle physics and cosmology is assumed) and the following topics:

- Dark matter (Boltzmann equation, Weakly interacting massive particles and others, Search strategies)

- Baryogensis (Sakharov's conditions, GUT baryogenesis, Spharelons,

Leptogenesis)

- Phase transitions (Thermal potential, Symmetry restoration, Topological defects)

- Inflation (Scalar field dynamics, Reheating, Inflation models) In each lecture, simple quizzes are provided.

Students are asked to present solutions in the begging of the next lecture.

2) Presentations by students:

Students read and explain a (part of) literature of their choice (preferably in particle cosmology).

Continuous supports for choosing and reading the literature are provided.

Some literatures are recommended also during the lectures.

Literatura:

Bibliography:

- E. Kolb and M. Turner, "The Early Universe"

- M. Bauer and T. Plehn, "Yet Another Introduction to Dark Matter"

- J. Cline, "Baryogensis"

- M. Laine and A. Vuorinen, "Basics of thermal field theory"

- A. Linde, "Particle Physics and Inflationary Cosmology"

Further references for each topic are provided during the lectures.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Assessment is based on the presentation and activity during the course (e.g., questions).
