Proseminar on Molecular Biophysics

General data

Course ID: 1100-3BB19
Erasmus code / ISCED: 13.203 The subject classification code consists of three to five digits, where the first three represent the classification of the discipline according to the Discipline code list applicable to the Socrates/Erasmus program, the fourth (usually 0) - possible further specification of discipline information, the fifth - the degree of subject determined based on the year of study for which the subject is intended. / (unknown)
Course title: Proseminar on Molecular Biophysics
Name in Polish: Proseminarium licencjackie biofizyki molekularnej
Organizational unit: Faculty of Physics
Course groups: (in Polish) Biofizyka; przedmioty dla III roku
ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 2.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Type of course:

obligatory courses

Prerequisites (description):

An obligatory course for the students of the 3rd year of "Applications of Physics in Biology and Medicine" (first level). Taking part in the course requires basic knowledge in physics, chemistry and biology with some medical aspects that are acquired during the first two years of studying.

Mode:

Classroom

Short description:

During the course every student prepares one presentation; the subject being taken from the list delivered by the scientists working in the Division of Biophysics (tutor). Additionally, each student listens to the other lectures and takes part in the discussion afterward.

Full description:

Every student prepares one ca. 30 min. presentation on a selected topic, from the list provided by the tutors from the Division of Biophysics.

Additionally, each student listens to the other lectures and takes part in the discussion afterward. The main aims of the course are to acquaint the students with crucial and basic problems in biophysics and bioinformatics, and to teach them how to make a presentation of scientific results.

Student's effort:

Listening to the presentations of others and preparation for discussion = 30 h

Preparation and deliver the presentation: ca. 30 h

Total: ca. 60 h

Description by Ryszard Stolarski, September 2012.

Bibliography:

Each presentation is prepared on the basis of the scientific publications selected for the student by the tutor.

Learning outcomes:

After completion the course:

KNOWLEDGE

1. The student knows the basic, joint problems of physics, chemistry, and biology, and in this regard the basic topics being developed in the Division of Biophysics.

2. The student knows the basic social relations of biophysical science.

SKILLS

1. The student is able to analyse connections between multidisciplinary research in biophysics and bioinformatics.

2. The student is able to deliver a presentation of basic scientific results of physics, chemistry, and biology.

3. The student knows English sufficiently to prepare and present a scientific problem.

SOCIAL ABILITIES

1. The student comprehends significance of solid scientific data and the necessity of collaboration to acquire them.

2. The student comprehends necessity to read and exploit the current scientific publications

3. The student recognizes the interrelations in physico-chemical and biomedical sciences.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The mark is verified by the coordinator of the course and the tutors of those students who make the presentations. The main criteria of the asessement are: substantive content, accommodation to the formal rules (observing the time, quality of slides), and answers to the questions. Additionally, participation in the course and discussions on the other presentations is also taken into account.
